            BACK IN TIME

Building automation tools for the decryption of historical documents

Get ready to uncover unexpected plots and secrets as old as time! The BACK IN TIME research project brings together expertise of researchers from three distinct fields to decipher encrypted historical letters, some of which have lain dormant for centuries! Given the sheer number of pages and the variety of symbols and rules involved, our aim is to develop software to assist or even automate the deciphering of documents from ancient, medieval and modern History.

            Artifical Intelligence

We develop custom AI models for Handwritten Text Recognition and Natural Language Processing tools to identify cipher symbols, perform text analysis and post-processing.

            Cryptography

Backed by the knowledge of historical and modern cryptography, we leverage Computational Analysis to identify cryptosystems and perform tailored cryptanalysis on the digitalized texts.

            History

From unearthing new documents to providing crucial historical context, historians are the critical link to finally develop reliable automation tools for encrypted historical documents.
